Fluid head: which of 20 carries your camera?

A fluid video head has two jobs: damping your pans so they look smooth — and holding your camera in a tilted position without you locking it down. The second job belongs to the counterbalance, and that is exactly where buyers slip up: one head carries 10 kg but only balances 4; another only starts balancing at 4 kg and is wrong for light cameras. We have recorded 20 heads from €79.90 (SmallRig CH20) to €1,515.70 (Sachtler FSB 8 Mk II) with their data-sheet figures. How this guide calculates

The assistant above works exclusively with manufacturer data-sheet figures and lays its rules open — you should be able to recalculate every recommendation.

Rule 1 — the payload window. A head is recommended when your rig weight uses about 50 to 75 percent of its manufacturer payload. That is a practitioners’ rule of thumb drawn from the consensus of hands-on sources (Blackmagic Design forum, Ulanzi guide; retrieved 20 July 2026), not a standard — below it you pay for more head than you need, above it the headroom gets thin. The hard limit is the payload figure alone.

Rule 2 — the counterbalance must include your weight. For continuous systems we check whether your weight sits inside the range — including the lower end: the Nitrotech 612 starts at 4 kg and will not balance lighter setups. For stepped systems the data-sheet range applies; where the manufacturer does not quantify the steps in kilograms (Benro, SmallRig), we say so instead of inventing values. With fixed counterbalance we only recommend when your weight sits close to the fixed value — we use a ±30 percent window, likewise a declared rule of thumb. Heads without counterbalance get a warning: they will not hold a tilted camera by themselves.

Rule 3 — rig height, conservatively. The required counter-torque depends not only on weight but on the height of the centre of gravity: a monitor on top of the camera raises the requirement at the same weight. Sachtler’s counterbalance tutorial and the explainer pages by Libec and Vinten describe exactly this (all retrieved 20 July 2026). Without measuring your rig it cannot be computed to the centimetre — so instead of a pseudo-formula we calculate conservatively: for tall setups we require the counterbalance to also cover the next weight window up.

Rule 4 — the base is a hard criterion. A bowl head does not fit a flat tripod; a flat-base head sits in a 75 mm bowl only with an adapter. The assistant filters accordingly and names the adapter route where it exists.

The weight classes (camera only / with accessories / cine rig / heavy rig) are our editorial grouping so you do not have to weigh everything. The anchor behind them is documented: a Sony FX3 weighs 715 g with battery and card, 1,015 g with the XLR handle (sony.de, retrieved 20 July 2026) — lens and accessories add up per their own data sheets. If you pick a class, we calculate with the upper edge of the window, never the most convenient case.

Why “8 kg” does not equal “8 kg”

Two numbers look identical on every data sheet and are not.

Payload: Manfrotto is the only manufacturer in the field that certifies its figure to an audited rule (UNI/PdR 105:2021, “Safety Payload”). Everyone else quotes maximums without a published test standard; Sachtler at least states the centre-of-gravity height (100 mm) its FSB figures refer to. We state the basis next to each figure.

Counterbalance: The figure always applies to a defined centre-of-gravity height — Manfrotto measures at 55 mm, Sachtler’s FSB heads at 100 mm (product pages, retrieved 20 July 2026). The higher the reference, the tougher the requirement: “0–12 kg at 100 mm” and “4–12 kg at 55 mm” describe different capabilities even though both end in “12”. Which is exactly why we do not rank counterbalance numbers across manufacturers, but print the reference height next to every value.

The four counterbalance designs — and their traps

First, a short clarification, because the two are easily confused: damping — also called friction or drag on some data sheets — slows the movement so pans run smoothly. The counterbalance holds the tilted camera in place. A head can be good at one and lack the other entirely.

No counterbalance (SmallRig CH20; none is stated for the Leofoto BV-10): the head damps but does not hold. Fine for light cameras and locked-off work — for everything else, a predictable bad buy.

Fixed (Manfrotto 500AH: 2.4 kg; 502AH: 4 kg; Sirui VH-10: approx. 2 kg per retailer): cheap and low-maintenance, but inflexible. If the fixed value does not match your weight, no amount of good damping helps.

Stepped (Benro S6PRO/S8PRO, Manfrotto 504X, Sachtler Ace and FSB): the head covers a range in grid steps — the finer the grid, the more precise the balance. Sachtler’s FSB heads grade 15 ways, the 504X 4 ways with quantified values (0/2.2/4.4/6.5 kg). Mind Benro and SmallRig: their steps are not quantified in kilograms.

Continuous (Manfrotto Nitrotech via nitrogen piston): every weight in the range, exactly — the 608 from 0 to 8 kg, the 612 from 4 to 12 kg. The 612’s lower limit is the most important trap of this design: buy the bigger head for a light camera on “more is better” instinct, and you get no working balance at all.

Add two borderline cases from the data sheets: the Leofoto BV-15 holds 10 kg locked, but per the manufacturer balances only a “balance load” of 0–3 kg — a classic spring counterbalance is not documented. And the Sirui VH-15 combines a 10 kg payload with at most 4 kg of counterbalance. Both heads are worth their money if you know this — and a disappointment if you do not.

On the prices

All prices on this page come from the retailer each one links to and carry their retrieval date (20 July 2026); we never attach figures from outside sources to a buy link, nor do we adopt retailers’ crossed-out discount claims. Two observations from the survey: the specialist retailer sold the Sirui VH-15 for €169 while the manufacturer’s shop charged €249 at the same time — the same model, €80 apart. And Teltec’s price for the Sachtler Ace XL Mk II (€599.76) is a declared promotional price; expect it to move again.

Model care: what phases out, what follows

Video heads disappear quietly. For the Manfrotto Nitrotech N8, the US specialist B&H explicitly lists the 608 as its replacement; for the Benro S7 we no longer found regular new-stock offers in Germany (both retrieved 20 July 2026) — the S-PRO series has taken its place. Sirui redirects the VA-5 product page to the VA-5X. And for the SmallRig PH8 the manufacturer’s shop reports a discontinued status while US retail actively lists it — as long as that is unresolved we do not recommend it and link no offer. The Sachtler Ace M Mk II, in turn, is per the manufacturer only available as a complete tripod system; the stated price applies to the system, not the head alone.

What does the counterbalance do — and why does it matter more than payload?

The counterbalance creates a counter-torque against the tilted camera so it stays put instead of flopping over (Sachtler's own counterbalance tutorial explains it the same way; sachtler.com, retrieved 20 July 2026). The payload only says how much the head withstands mechanically. A head can carry 10 kg and still balance only 4 — beyond that you have to lock every tilt. That is why our assistant asks for your weight first and checks it against the counterbalance range, not just the payload.

How much payload headroom does a video head need?

There is no standard for this. We use the practitioners' rule of thumb that the rig should use about 50 to 75 percent of the manufacturer payload — leaving headroom for accessories without paying for an oversized head. The rule comes from the consensus of practitioner forums and guides (including the Blackmagic Design forum and the Ulanzi guide, both retrieved 20 July 2026); we label it as a rule of thumb everywhere. Why can't I compare counterbalance figures across manufacturers?

Because the required counter-torque depends not only on weight but on how high the camera's centre of gravity sits above the head. Manufacturers therefore state their values for a defined centre-of-gravity height — and it differs: Manfrotto measures at 55 mm, Sachtler's FSB heads at 100 mm (respective product pages, retrieved 20 July 2026). "8 kg at 100 mm" is a tougher requirement than "8 kg at 55 mm"; the same number does not mean the same thing. That is why we print the reference height next to every value instead of ranking the numbers against each other.

Flat base or 75 mm bowl — which do I need?

The flat base with a 3/8" thread fits photo/video tripods without a bowl, and sliders. The 75 mm bowl sits in video tripods with a bowl mount and levels in seconds — handy if you often stand on uneven ground. Sachtler heads (Ace, FSB) need the bowl; most other heads in the field need the flat base. Two special cases: the Sachtler Ace XL Mk II has both in one (bowl with an integrated flat base), and the SmallRig CH20 brings its own mini levelling bowl with ±10°.

How much does the quick-release plate system matter?

More than the price suggests. Three worlds: Manfrotto's 501PL/504PL plates are the quasi-standard that third parties adopt (Neewer GM006, SmallRig PH8). Arca-compatible plates (Leofoto, SmallRig CH20) connect video with photo gear. Benro, Sirui and Sachtler use their own systems. If you have plates on several cameras, a gimbal or L-brackets, the matching system saves real re-rigging money — which is why you can state it in the assistant above.

Nitrotech N8, Benro S7, Sirui VA-5 — are the predecessors still worth it?

Be careful with recommendation lists from earlier years. For the Manfrotto Nitrotech N8, the US specialist B&H explicitly lists the Nitrotech 608 as its replacement (retrieved 20 July 2026). For the Benro S7 we found no regular new-stock offers in Germany on 20 July 2026 — the S-PRO series has taken its place. For the Sirui VA-5, the manufacturer's shop redirects to the successor VA-5X; remaining stock exists in retail. If you find a phased-out model cheap, consider spare-part and plate supply — our recommendations focus on the available successors.

What does a good fluid video head cost?

The field splits into three tiers: entry heads for light cameras cost €80 to €150, capable all-rounders with adjustable counterbalance roughly €170 to €650, and the Sachtler FSB reference class starts at €1,380 — plus a bowl tripod. More expensive does not automatically mean better; it usually means finer counterbalance grading, sturdier mechanics, faster handling. Whether you need that depends on weight and use — exactly what the assistant above asks.

  • Choose by weight and counterbalance first, not by payload: a head whose counterbalance range includes your rig weight holds the camera in any tilt by itself. The payload is only the ceiling, not the recommendation.
  • If your rig grows or changes, adjustable counterbalance (stepped or continuous) is worth the premium; if you always run the same camera, a matching fixed value serves you for less money.
