Shower toilets: will one fit your bathroom? 24 models

Why the first question is about the connection

There is exactly one compulsory question above, and it sounds more harmless than it is. Behind “What does your bathroom offer?” sit three junctions that come before any feature list.

The first concerns the ceramic. If your bowl stays, only a retrofit seat is an option: it replaces the toilet seat, leaving tiles and pre-wall untouched. If the ceramic has to come out anyway, the complete unit is the tighter solution, because bowl and spray technology form a single piece.

The second concerns electricity. Electric devices need 230 volts within reach of the toilet — taken for granted in new builds, frequently absent in existing bathrooms. Anyone who leaves this point until last risks ending up with a device in its box and an electrician in the diary.

The third concerns water: flow pressure, cold or hot water connection, and drinking-water protection. These figures live in the manufacturer’s documents, rarely on a shop’s product page. That is why every card here carries them right above the price, not in the small print.

Drinking-water protection: what sits behind EN 1717

A shower toilet brings drinking water to a place where faecal germs live. The rulebooks therefore assign the application to fluid category 5, the highest of five hazard levels. For it, DIN EN 1717 and DIN 1988-100 require a family A safety device — a free air gap, a physical break between drinking water and appliance water. That is a construction principle, not a valve you slot in afterwards (trade articles from IKZ and SBZ Monteur, retrieved 27 July 2026).

How manufacturers state this varies, and that variation is precisely the practical information:

Two terms help when reading those lines. EN 13077 is the product standard for exactly one of these designs: the air gap with a non-circular overflow — type AB in the EN 1717 system. The unrestricted air gap (type AA) is covered by EN 13076, the air gap with injector (type AD) by EN 13078. That is why “EN 13077 family A, type B” (GROHE) and “type AB” (Geberit) mean the same design — the English edition of that same GROHE manual even writes it as “EN13077-type AB”. And the DVGW mark W 540 certifies that an appliance’s safety device has been tested — on the TECEone it takes the place of a type designation.

For you this means: where the protection appears in the manufacturer’s documents, the connection is routine work for a trade business. Where the documents are silent on it, the question belongs on the list for your installer. He has to take responsibility for the protection anyway — it is part of his work on your drinking-water installation, not part of your order.

With a socket, or with line pressure

The large majority of devices here need power behind the toilet. Rated power runs from 800 W on the Geberit AquaClean 4000 to 2,000 W on the AquaClean Mera Comfort and the Tuma Classic seat; in between sit the MEWATEC seats (870 to 1,650 W), the BERNSTEIN series (950 W), the GROHE units (850 and 920 W) and the LAUFEN devices (1,150 and 1,400 W).

Both LAUFEN Cleanet units are a special case: for the Riva and the Navia the manufacturer explicitly names a hard-wired NYM connection alongside the socket, and for the Navia a dedicated cable duct as well (art. no. 89560.3). If you would rather not have a visible socket in the bathroom, there is a documented alternative here. Either way the work belongs to an electrical or plumbing trade business — 230 volts in wet areas is not an evening project.

Four devices manage without electricity, and they cover two very different price brackets: the retrofit seats from EISL (€55.69) and MEWATEC (Dushlet Nevada, €89.95), and the complete ceramics TECEone (€848.99) and VitrA Aquacare. Going without power costs comfort: a heated seat and warm-air drying are not available without a socket.

Hot water: tank, boiler or instantaneous heater

How the water gets warm only becomes noticeable on the second use. Three principles appear.

A tank keeps a limited quantity pre-heated: BERNSTEIN states a hot-water tank for the 1102 series, MEWATEC a hot-water tank for the D100 2.0 and a 700 ml boiler for the E300. Once that quantity is used up, it takes time before warm water is available again. An instantaneous heater warms the water as it flows and does not know that limit — that is how the GROHE Sensia (with 1,200 W of water heating output), the MEWATEC E800 and the Villeroy und Boch ViClean-I 100 work. The third route is the most unusual: the TECEone draws its hot water from the building’s own supply and blends it through a thermostatic valve to between 10 and 38 °C. It is the only path to tempered water without electricity in this overview — and the reason for that second connection.

What buyers report

Ratings are unevenly distributed in this category: marketplace retrofit seats collect hundreds of voices, while brand units from specialist retailers collect a handful each. Both appear on the cards above with platform, count and retrieval date.

The top group consists of retrofit seats. The MEWATEC Dushlet Nevada reaches 4.5 out of 5 from 195 Amazon ratings, 74 per cent of them five stars; the MEWATEC E300 reaches 4.4 from 87 ratings (72 per cent five stars), the E800 4.5 from 29. The largest base of all belongs to the VOVO VB-4100SR with 1,368 ratings and an average of 4.3. Amazon breaks that feedback down by topic itself: 38 mentions concern cleaning performance, 30 of them positive, and 31 concern value for money, 28 of them positive (all figures amazon.de, retrieved 27 July 2026).

Among the complete units, the Geberit AquaClean Mera Comfort leads with 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reuter ratings — the highest average among all devices here that reach at least ten ratings.

The lowest score belongs to a mid-range device. The BERNSTEIN Dusch-WC Premium 1102 stands at 2.6 out of 5 on Amazon. The distribution explains why that average does not mean “mediocre” but a divided customer base: 43 per cent of the twelve ratings give one star, 25 per cent five, 16 per cent four and 16 per cent two — the middle rating is missing entirely (amazon.de, retrieved 27 July 2026). Twelve voices are few; anyone considering this model should read the reviews themselves rather than rely on the average.

And then the single voices. The Duravit SensoWash Starck f Lite Compact has exactly one Reuter rating, at 2.0 out of 5; the Villeroy und Boch ViClean-I 100 has exactly one, at 5.0. Both figures are real, and both say the same thing: nothing. Below five voices an average is an anecdote, not a finding — which is why that note also appears on the cards. More interesting is a comparison across platforms: the Geberit AquaClean Alba stands at 5.0 with one rating on Reuter and at 3.6 with five ratings on Amazon. Same unit, two audiences, two pictures.

Where the prices come from

Every figure on this page was read on 27 July 2026 in the shop its button points to — Reuter, Megabad, Bernstein Badshop or Amazon. Whatever a figure says elsewhere, it never ends up behind one of our buttons. And a struck-through amount in an offer stays a non-binding recommended price: we neither count against it nor derive a saving from it.
